I have missed you forever

A parade and a dog

In an abandoned theatre, several people gather for a memorial service. As with any funeral, everyone has a different memory, image or idea of the person they are remembering. The person who died led many lives and carried many unseen histories. And slowly, multiple voices are heard trying to tell their story. Voices of people who have been rejected, persecuted or forgotten. Yet here they are, alive and kicking. They form a parade of stories, speeches and music: all different in nature and time, but now moving as one, united.

A parade and a dog

For this project, a collective of performers, writers and composers was formed, with a foundation in different disciplines and backgrounds. By sharing stories, learning songs and movements, exchanging skills in workshops and through online channels, the basis was built for this production. The makers' team gave their ideas to the performers, who in return came up with a plethora of visions and creations. The performance can justifiably be called a collective work, which was created through parallel timelines and from different disciplines. All this comes together in a final pressure cooker assembly and rehearsal period leading up to the performances in ITA. There, the audience will surround the performers, and in turn, be surrounded by rituals of mourning and joy: the result of this massive project.

With their FAUST [Working title], Kamps and Heijboer Castañón brought a working practice to Dutch National Opera that DNO wishes to continue to explore with them and other artists in the future. Under the title [Collective Works], DNO is therefore creating space for experimentation, both on stage and in the rehearsal studio. This space is intended for research into new forms of working with a collective character. What does it mean to make opera collectively? And what does it mean to do so in an inclusive way? [Collective Works] is an initiative in which the vision of OFF is central; it is about discovering other stories and forms, experimenting with collective making processes and exploring the endless possibilities of the art form.
