Romeo and Juliet – but not as you expect

Be swept away by a passionate tragedy of hatred, love, promise, and guilt, wrapped in the breathtaking bel canto music of composer Vincenzo Bellini.

I Capuleti e i Montecchi tells the famous love story of Romeo and Juliet—but in a completely different way. Bellini did not base his opera on Shakespeare, but on older Italian sources. In this new production by director Tatjana Gürbaca, the focus is not on the romantic, impossible love between two young people, but on the spiral of violence, honor, and guilt from which no one can escape.

Between hatred and love

The ongoing feud between the Capuleti and Montecchi families has already claimed lives: Capellio’s son—Giulietta’s brother—was killed in the past. Romeo, leader of the Montecchi, returns to Verona as an unwelcome reminder of that past and rekindles the conflict between the two families. While Giulietta awaits her arranged marriage to Tebaldo, Romeo believes that his return might also reignite the flame of love.

Bellini’s bel canto

Composer Vincenzo Bellini captures the tension between love and loyalty in every note, while masterfully exposing the inner conflicts of his characters. Under the baton of bel canto specialist Antonino Fogliani, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chorus of Dutch National Opera, and an outstanding cast bring the lyrical power of Bellini’s music to life.

A new production by Tatjana Gürbaca

Director Tatjana Gürbaca is known for her profound musical interpretations and intense character direction. The Dutch National Opera previously presented her powerful La traviata in Amsterdam. In her new staging of I Capuleti e i Montecchi, a Romeo and Juliet story unfolds that challenges the very notion of unconditional romance.

A story of honour and revenge

Director Tatjana Gürbaca on I Capuleti e i Montecchi

Tatjana Gürbaca will be directing Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi. This bel canto opera relates the famous story of Romeo and Juliet, but has a different take on it than Shakespeare’s famous play. Rather than the romance between the young lovers, it focuses on the history of hatred and violence in which they become ensnared.
