A struggle between desire and reality

The central character, Semele, creates a fantasy world in which her deepest desires are fulfilled. But the stronger this illusion becomes, the more she seems to lose…

This story is brought vividly to life in a setting filled with dark feathers and tender wedding scenes, and through the music of composer George Frideric Handel. He was one of the foremost specialists in Baroque music, a seventeenth-century style characterised by strong emotions and richly ornamented melodies. One of the world’s leading Baroque orchestras travels from France to bring this music to life with renewed brilliance

Handel’s unique approach

Semele has never before been staged in Amsterdam. In this opera, George Frideric Handel embraced the English tradition of narrative theatre, breaking away from Italian conventions. Drawing inspiration from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, he created a work that is both intimate and grand. By combining a dramatic operatic style with the lyrical sensitivity of an oratorio, Semele holds a unique place in Handel’s repertoire.

Handel specialists

After their acclaimed performance of Giulio Cesare in the 2022 – 2023 season, conductor Emmanuelle Haïm and her Le Concert d’Astrée return to Amsterdam. Director Claus Guth, widely praised at Dutch National Opera for his powerful stagings of Jephtha (2016) and Rodelinda (2020), now adds Semele to his impressive series of Handel productions.

An exceptional cast

The title role is performed by soprano Elsa Benoit, who makes her house debut. Countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński appears at Dutch National Opera for the first time as Athamas, impressing not only vocally but also as a breakdancer. The cast also includes Jasmin White, Jessica Niles and Florian Boesch.

The story

Semele feels like a bystander in her own life. Under pressure from her father, she agrees to marry Athamas, but in her heart, she longs for the supreme god Jupiter. Her love thus becomes an escape into fantasy, where she is granted everything she desires: an understanding father, a loving husband, and complete self-determination. But the stronger her illusion becomes, the further she drifts from reality. As her role as bride is taken over by her sister Ino, she risks losing herself in what could have been.

The story

Act I

Semele, the daughter of Cadmus, is about to marry Athamas but yearns for the god Jupiter, who has appeared to her in the guise of an eagle. She calls upon him to prevent the marriage.

There are loud peals of thunder and the wedding guests flee. Semele’s sister Ino is left alone with Athamas and confesses her own secret love for him. Cadmus returns with the news that Semele has been carried off by Jupiter in the form of a gigantic eagle.

Act II

Jupiter’s wife Juno is suspicious and has sent her messenger Iris to find out what is going on. Iris informs her that Jupiter has put Semele in a palace high up on a mountain, guarded by two dragons that never sleep.

In the meantime, Semele is having a blissful period of love with Jupiter, although she is also aware of their differences: she is mortal while he is an immortal god. When she shares her wish for immortality with him, Jupiter tries to distract Semele from these thoughts by arranging a visit from her sister Ino.

Act III

Juno wakes Somnus, the god of sleep, and asks him to help stupefy Jupiter’s dragons. This lets Juno carry out her plan: she takes on Ino’s appearance and convinces Semele to force Jupiter to reveal himself to her in his true form, that of the ‘Mighty Thunderer’, as the only way for Semele to become immortal.

Semele first makes Jupiter swear to fulfil her wish and then puts her request to him. He knows the consequences and tries in vain to change her mind. Overwhelmed by Jupiter’s true form, Semele realises her mistake too late and his apparition destroys her. Although the people are mourning Semele, the wedding festivities resume – this time for Ino and Athamas. The voice of the god Apollo announces the birth of the god Bacchus, son of Semele and Jupiter.
