Michael Levine

Set designer

Canadian set designer Michael Levine studied at the Central School of Art and Design in London. He has since grown into an internationally acclaimed set designer for opera, theatre and film. He regularly works with directors such as Simon McBurney, Robert Carsen and Deborah Warner, and he has created productions for venues including the Royal Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opera and Zurich Opera House. In 2006, he designed and directed a complete Ring cycle for the Canadian Opera Company. His designs for Dutch National Opera include Hänsel und Gretel (2015), A Dog’s Heart (2011, 2017), The Rake’s Progress (2018), Carmen (2022), Turandot (2022) and Die Zauberflöte (2012, 2018, 2023).

Handel’s Semele, with set design by Michael Levine, will be performed from 17 to 29 January 2026 at Dutch National Opera.
