Masters of contemporary ballet

In Masters of Movement, three top choreographers come together in a programme filled with dynamism, technique, and emotion. David Dawson returns with his explosive masterpiece Empire Noir, a ballet that never fails to earn standing ovations.

Krzysztof Pastor is creating a brand-new work for a large cast, made especially for our company. Meanwhile, we will present a ballet by Alexei Ratmansky that has never before been seen in Europe. The exact details of these works remain a surprise, but with these internationally celebrated artists, this promises to be an unforgettable experience. Masters of Movement is a unique opportunity to see three great masters of contemporary ballet in one performance.

Three choreographers, three visions

David Dawson, Krzysztof Pastor, and Alexei Ratmansky are three visionary artists, each enriching ballet with their own distinctive style.

British choreographer David Dawson created Empire Noir (2015) as his first work following his appointment as Associate Artist at Dutch National Ballet. He described it as “about choreography, about dancers and how they relate to one another.” The result is an explosive ballet, centred on the near-manic urgency that can emerge in dreams. A rollercoaster of virtuosity.

A new ballet for a large cast

Like Dawson, Polish choreographer Krzysztof Pastor was a longtime dancer with Dutch National Ballet, where both began their choreographic careers. Both later became resident choreographers before pursuing international success. Pastor now mainly focuses on his role as artistic director of the Polish National Ballet. Recently, the Junior Company performed his dynamic Toccata, and now, for the first time since 2010, Pastor is creating a large-scale new work for Dutch National Ballet.

A master choreographer

The third ballet in Masters of Movement is a European premiere by the world-renowned Russian-Ukrainian-American choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. Recently, he has strengthened his collaboration with Dutch National Ballet. Following previous productions of his Don Quixote and several contemporary works, Ratmansky was appointed as an Associate Artist in November 2024, alongside Dawson.

Dance as a lasting bond

Three choreographers, one shared history

Choreographers David Dawson (1972), Krzysztof Pastor (1956) and Alexei Ratmansky (1968) reflect on their special connection with Dutch National Ballet and with artistic director Ted Brandsen. Three of their works come together in the programme Masters of Movement

Dutch Ballet Orchestra

Dutch Ballet Orchestra is the leading orchestra for dance in the Netherlands. In every performance, the orchestra searches for inspiring synergy between music and dance, in order to give the audience a magical experience. From classical ballet to modern masterpieces, and from music education to talent development, Dutch Ballet Orchestra inspires the movement in dance.

Dutch Ballet Orchestra

From 1 August 2024, the Flemish conductor Koen Kessels (1961) is the new music director of Dutch National Ballet, and artistic director and principal conductor of Dutch Ballet Orchestra. He took over the baton from Matthew Rowe, who has fulfilled this special dual position since 2013 and who will be returning as principal guest conductor.

Since its inception in 1965, the orchestra has been the proud musical partner of Dutch National Ballet and Nederlands Dans Theater. One important mission of Dutch Ballet Orchestra is investing in the youngest generation of dancers and musicians.

In 2023, for instance, the orchestra issued an open call for young composers, in collaboration with Dutch National Ballet, resulting in a new work that was presented in the Junior Company’s touring programme, Ten. The orchestra has also been working for some years already with the Dutch National Ballet Academy. For example, the orchestra members provide the music for the end-of-year performances Dancers of Tomorrow.

Dutch Ballet Orchestra has also collaborated regularly on innovative – and award-winning – family and school productions. Creatures, in partnership with ISH Dance Collective, won the international Young Audiences Music Award and the production Hansel and Gretel, received various Musical Awards.
