Giorgi Potskhishvili promoted to soloist

8 April 2023

We are proud to announce that, as of last night, Giorgi Potskhishvili has been promoted to the rank of soloist. This promotion followed the performance of Swan Lake, in which Potskhishvili made his debut in the role of Prince Siegfried. Earlier in this performance series of Swan Lake, he already danced the role of the wizard Von Rothbart.

Potskhishvili joined Dutch National Ballet’s Junior Company in 2020 and joined Dutch National Ballet as an élève within one year. In the past three years, he was promoted twice: to coryphée in 2022 – skipping the corps de ballet – and to grand sujet in May of that same year. In April 2022, he danced his first lead role, as Abd al-Rahman in Rachel Beaujean’s reinterpretation of Raymonda.

“Giorgi is a phenomenal dancer, a natural like you rarely come across: a strong personality with an unbelievable power in his jumps, amazing technique and an innate feeling for partner work. In the year and a half since he started in the Junior Company, Giorgi has grown enormously as a dancer, truly deserving of this rapid promotion to the rank of soloist”, says Ted Brandsen, director of Dutch National Ballet, about Potskhishvili.

We want to congratulate Giorgi Potskhishvili on this well-deserved promotion and wish him all the luck in his further career with Dutch National Ballet.

Giorgi Potskhishvili (Tbilisi, Georgia) was born into a true dancing family. By the age of seven, he had started learning Georgian dance and other folk dances at his parent’s dance school. And when he was older, he performed with a folk dance ensemble for a while. He was accepted to the V. Chabukiani Tbilisi Ballet Art State School at the age of thirteen and in 2017, he was invited by Elena Glurjidze, former lead principal at English National Ballet, to join her Summer Intensive Course at the Masters of Ballet Academy in London. It was here that he first heard of the Dutch National Ballet Academy. He was able to secure a spot there after a successful audition in 2018. Two years later, Potskhishvili joined the Junior Company of Dutch National Ballet.
