New Moves

Discover new choreographic talent

Note: New Moves will be performed on 25 September 2023

New Moves 2022/2023 has been cancelled. The next New Moves will take place at the beginning of season 2023/2024. There will be two performances on 25 September, one at 7pm and one at 9pm. You will find more information about this on the website after the presentation of the new season in March 2023.

Dancer Pascal Johnson referred to New Moves – in which he has regularly participated as a choreographer in recent years – as ‘a sacred place, where you can let anything happen and explore your own artistry’. Following an online version due to COVID-19 restrictions, Dutch National Ballet hopes to be able to present a live edition of New Moves this season. It gives dancers an opportunity to explore and develop their choreographic talent and present their work to an audience.

Discover new choreographic talent

In the seventies, Dutch National Ballet was the first Dutch dance company to give its dancers the opportunity to create their own ballets in choreographic workshops. At the time, these workshops took place occasionally and outside of the regular performance and rehearsal schedule. They gave rise to many talented choreographers, including David Dawson, Jan Linkens, Krzysztof Pastor and the present director of Dutch National Ballet, Ted Brandsen.

Hotbed

From personal experience, Brandsen knows the importance of such opportunities for prospective choreographers. So, when he became director of Dutch National Ballet in 2003, he decided more or less immediately to make the choreographic workshop a permanent fixture on the programme, under the title New Moves. And it has had some great results. In recent years, young choreographers such as Juanjo Arqués, Daniela Cardim, Monique Duurvoort, Peter Leung, Ernst Meisner, Milena Sidorova and Remi Wörtmeyer have attracted attention for their exciting, virtuoso, humorous and poignant creations.

Soloist roles

Furthermore, New Moves often gives young dancers the opportunity to gain experience in soloist roles, enabling them to explore their talents and discover different sides of themselves.
