Vilma Jää is a singer, composer, fiddler and researcher who works in the fields of folk music, pop music and opera. Jää graduated with a Masters of Music from The Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in 2021. Her synthesising of tradition and pop culture has earned her ethno-pop music recognition on major radio playlists, and she has been invited to perform on Finnish national TV and at festivals including Flow Festival and Lost in Music. Jää’s principal subject of research are Finnish and Karelian herding calls. She invented a graphic notation system that would convey as much information about this unique style of music as possible.
Vilma Jää makes her DNO debut with the role of Markéta (Student 1) in Innocence, to be seen at Dutch National Opera from 7 to 22 October 2023.
