Dutch National Opera presents a special programme during the OperaVision Summer Gala, the gala that brings together eight leading European opera houses on World Music Day on 21 June. For Dutch National Opera top artists Eva-Maria Westbroek and Thomas Oliemans sing a unique programme: a nostalgic love story based on pieces by Strauss, Weill, Lehár and Piazzolla and Gardel. They are accompanied by Ernst Munneke on piano. Through the musical contribution of Vadim Tsibulevski, concertmaster of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, DNO's regular orchestra partner is also involved in the gala.

Richard Strauss: “Heimliche Aufforderung” Op. 27 no. 3

Astor Piazzolla: “Los pájaros perdidos”

Watch: Masterclass Bill T. Jones

Conversation with young music theatre makers
Bill T. Jones, Toni Blackwell, Koen van Etten, Gavin-Viano Fabri, Frieda Gustavs, Sean Hauser, Isabel van Hauwe, Stephen Liebman, Djuwa Mroivili, Angelo Ormskerk, Peggy Olislaegers, Dutch National Opera.

Video online here from Saturday, 20 June, 15.00 hours.

Bill T. Jones creates performances in which the whimsicality of the world is never denied. In 1994, for example, he made the performance Still/Here over and together with seriously ill people. He organized workshops in ten American cities, in which they spoke frankly about their life-threatening conditions. The opera We Shall Not Be Moved, about racist police violence, directed by Jones, could be seen at the Opera Forward Festival of the National Opera in 2018. And for his most recent project, Deep Blue Sea, Jones decided to work with a hundred people from local communities.

Mr. Jones, what kind of mark would you like to leave on the world, if you were 21 again today?

On the stage of Dutch National Opera & Ballet, nine young music theatre makers will talk to Jones, who is present in the US via a video link. How does he view the protests against institutional racism that are going on right now?  Does he see parallels between the global COVID-19 epidemic and the impact of the AIDS epidemic that he witnessed at close quarters in the 1980s? In what way has Jones, in his work over the past five decades, brought themes such as inequality, representation, injustice and loss to the fore... and what does he wish for a new generation of theatre makers? A discussion about responsibility, resilience and urgency in the performing arts. The meeting is moderated by Peggy Olislaegers, dance activist and associate on research & development of the Dutch National Ballet.

Missed it: Gurre-Lieder until Sunday 21 June

With our stage production of Gurre-Lieder a long-cherished wish of conductor Marc Albrecht and director Pierre Audi came true. Schoenberg's grand masterpiece was never intended for the opera stage by the composer himself. However, it turned out to be a masterstroke. As Marc Albrecht takes his leave from the post of chief-conductor of Dutch National Opera in relative silence, we conclude our streaming season with one of his most cherished projects at Dutch National Opera.
