LUDWIG

Orchestra

In 2012, six Dutch orchestral musicians defied the dominant trends and set up a new musical ensemble. They wanted a group that would stand out not just for its artistic quality but also for its scope and flexibility. LUDWIG — the name obviously refers to the most famous cultural entrepreneur in classical music — varies in size from a single soloist to a fully-fledged symphony orchestra.

LUDWIG’s programming is both carefully thought out and adventurous. The artistic leader Peppie Wiersma is adept at combining composers from different periods and with different styles and backgrounds. The standard of the performances is superlative. The musicians often interact with the audience, play from memory, experiment with various forms of presentation and collaborate with creative professionals from other disciplines.

Since its early days, LUDWIG has had a warm working relationship with the innovative conductor and singer Barbara Hannigan. They released their first album, Crazy Girl Crazy, in 2017; it won a Grammy in January 2018. In 2019, Barbara and LUDWIG toured Europe and the United States with Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. In 2020, they released their much acclaimed second album, La Passione, which was rewarded with a Diapason d'Or and Choc de l'année 2020. 2022 saw the release of Dance With Me, a CD full of ballroom hits from Viennese waltzes to the cha-cha-cha.
