The productions she has directed include Pélleas et Mélisande, Alcina, Trauernacht, The House Taken Over, Written on Skin, Lucia di Lammermoor, Parthenogenesis, Clemency, Miranda, Neither, The Way Back Home, The Sacrifice, Jephtha, Kát’a Kabanová and Idomeneo, for Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Salzburger Festspiele, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, English National Opera, Opéra-Comique and Berliner Staatsoper, among others. Mitchell was associate director with the Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre and Royal Court Theatre. For Toneelgroep Amsterdam, she directed a production of Jean Genet’s De Meiden. In 2009, Mitchell was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and in 2017 she received the President’s Medal from the British Academy. With DNO, Katie Mitchell directed a new production of Janáček’s Jenůfa, in October 2018.
