Kaija Saariaho

Composer

Kaija Saariaho was a prominent Finnish artist whose work has worldwide impact. Her studies and research at IRCAM have had a major influence on her music and her characteristically luxuriant and mysterious textures are often created by combining live music and electronics. Although much of her catalogue comprises chamber works, from the mid-nineties she has turned increasingly to larger forces and broader structures, as seen in her operas L’Amour de loinAdriana Mater and Emilie. Saariaho has received many major composing awards. Dutch National Opera previously presented Emilie in 2010, followed by the world premiere of Only The Sound Remains in 2016.

October 2023, Dutch National Opera will present the Finnish composer's latest work: Innocence.
