Erik Nielsen

Conductor

Erik Nielsen studied conducting at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and graduated with a double major in oboe and harp from The Juilliard School New York. In 2002, he began a ten-year association with Oper Frankfurt (Germany). Nielsen was named Chief Conductor of the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra (Spain) in 2015 and has served as Chief Conductor of the Tyrolean Festspiele Erl (Austria) since 2022, in which context he will complete Wagner’s entire Ring Cycle. Recent engagements include Salome with the Zurich Opera House (Switzerland), Rusalka and Norma with Semperoper Dresden (Germany), and Peter Grimes and Das Rheingold at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (Germany).

Nielsen’s earlier conducting engagements with Dutch National Opera included Kurt Weill’s Die sieben Todsünden (2021) and Manfred Trojahn’s Eurydice – Die Liebenden, blind (2022), which was named ‘World Premiere of the Year’ by Oper!, a German opera journal.
