An exploration of the power of immersive sound art
Discover the world of interactive and immersive soundscapes. In this edition of Techlab, director Celine Daemen, art director Aron Fels, composer Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman, and spatial sound engineer Wouter Snoei offer a glimpse into the creative process behind Nothing to see here. This audiovisual installation, designed for public spaces, will offer passers-by a fascinating kaleidoscopic experience that challenges the boundary between perception and reality. After all, can we ever truly know what is “real”?
In their work-in-progress presentation, the artistic team behind Nothing to see here will specifically focus on the role of spatial, interactive audio within the installation. How do spatial audio experiences disrupt (our perception of) reality? And how does audio interact with elements such as 3D imagery? This edition of Techlab offers an exclusive look behind the scenes and a chance to try out a prototype of the installation yourself. There will also be time to speak with the creators and ask questions. Don’t miss it!

The studio has gained significant national and international attention in recent years for its virtual reality operas and immersive experiences. In 2023, Studio Nergens won the Venice Immersive Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale for Songs for a Passerby, which was also presented during the Opera Forward Festival 2024. The VR opera Eurydice received the Reflet d’Or for best immersive experience at GIFF in Geneva in 2022.
Techlab: a space for experimentation
The work-in-progress presentation of Nothing to see here is part of Techlab. This lab, based in Studio Boekman, offers opera and ballet makers the opportunity to experiment with digital technology. The focus is on exploration and research. The outcome of that research is shared with the audience, alongside reflections on the creative and research process. Previous Techlab editions include Pulse, an exploration of the value of AI for ballet, and Making new opera with a robot, which investigated how to create an opera for and with a robot.
