New Moves

On an adventure with the dance makers of the future

Stimulating creativity and providing a platform for new voices in the dance world. That is the goal of New Moves, the young choreographers’ programme initiated by artistic director Ted Brandsen in 2003. New Moves challenges the dancers of Dutch National Ballet – and frequently young makers from outside as well – to explore their choreographic talents, producing unique surprises every year!

On an adventure with the dance makers of the future

New Moves gives you the opportunity to go on an adventure with the dance makers of the future. And also to see young dancers of the company in the new creations presented, performing in very different roles and maybe even dancing their first solo parts. In addition, all these choreographic and dancing discoveries take place right in front of you, as for the first time the New Moves performances are being given in the new small theatre of Dutch National Opera & Ballet: Studio Boekman.

The necessity for innovation

By attending New Moves, you are also contributing to the development of new talent, the importance of which is stressed by Ted Brandsen. “I firmly believe in the power of creativity and the necessity for our art form to continually rediscover itself. We need to invest time, energy and resources in encouraging young choreographers.”

From promising to internationally acclaimed

New Moves has already produced a whole new generation of dance makers, including Juanjo Arqués, Peter Leung, Ernst Meisner, Milena Sidorova and Remi Wörtmeyer. But also Ted Brandsen himself and other internationally acclaimed choreographers, like David Dawson and Krzysztof Pastor, made their first ballets for the young choreographers’ programmes organised on an incidental basis from the 1970’s by Dutch National Ballet, as the first company to do so in the Netherlands.
