Tobias Kratzer
The German director Tobias Kratzer studied art history and philosophy in Munich and Bern, and directing at the Theaterakademie August Everding in Munich. He has acquired international renown for his productions at venues including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Komische Oper Berlin and Oper Frankfurt, as well as for the Aix-en-Provence and Bayreuth festivals. His work has been recognised with awards including a Faust (the German theatre prize), as well as distinctions such as ‘Director of the Year’ from Opernwelt magazine and at the OPER! awards. Productions such as Tannhäuser in Bayreuth, Guillaume Tell in Lyon and Fidelio in London were widely acclaimed. Kratzer is artistic director of Staatsoper Hamburg as of the 2025–2026 season. He marked his appointment there with Das Paradies und die Peri and the world premiere of Monster’s Paradise by Olga Neuwirth and Elfriede Jelinek. At Dutch National Opera, he previously directed Les contes d’Hoffmann (2018).
