Thomas Jung
German conductor Thomas Jung enjoys an international career as a concert conductor and, in recent years, has become highly sought after for dance and theatre productions. In 2025, he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Birmingham Royal Ballet and its orchestra, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, building on his earlier appointment in 2018 as Constant Lambert Conducting Fellow with both Birmingham Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet in London.
At Birmingham Royal Ballet, he conducted performances of Forgotten Land by Jiří Kylián and Seventh Symphony by Uwe Scholz (both in 2022), and he opened the company’s runs of The Nutcracker in 2023 of 2024. He also conducted the world premieres of Sense of Time by Didy Veldman (2019) and Hotel by Morgann Runacre-Temple (2022). Jung has also been a guest conductor with, among others, English National Ballet and the Semperoper Ballett in Dresden. In 2024, he conducted the anniversary production of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake in London.
As an orchestral conductor, Jung has worked with ensembles such as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, Het Gelders Orkest, the Orkest van het Oosten, the Mantua Chamber Orchestra, and the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra in China. In 2024, he recorded Marcel Tyberg’s Second Symphony with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra for the television broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk.
In 2013, Jung met the famous Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink at the Lucerne Festival, after which he had the opportunity to work with him several times as an assistant and cover conductor. Haitink’s artistic and personal integrity were a major inspiration for Jung. As an assistant conductor, he worked with, among others, Jakub Hrůša (Bamberg Symphony Orchestra), Semyon Bychkov and Jukka-Pekka Saraste (WDR Symphony Orchestra), and Markus Stenz and Francois-Xavier Roth (Gürzenich Orchestra).
In 2020, Jung won second prize at the International Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition and, in 2017, he was awarded the Eugen Jochum Prize. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne and at King’s College, Cambridge. His conducting teachers were Volker Wangenheim and Colin Metters. He also attended masterclasses with Bernard Haitink, Jaap van Zweden, and Jorma Panula.
