Stefan Herheim

Herheim studied music theatre directing with Götz Friedrich at the University of Hamburg, where he graduated in 1999 with a production of Die Zauberflöte. Nowadays, he guests in Europe’s leading opera houses and at the major festivals, such as Berlin (La forza del destino, Lohengrin, Serse), Oslo (Giulio Cesare, Tannhäuser, La bohème), Salzburger Festspiele (Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Salome, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Vienna (Madama Butterfly), Graz (Carmen), Bayreuther Festspiele (Parsifal), Brussels (Rusalka), Stuttgart (Der Rosenkavalier), Copenhagen (Lulu), Dresden (Manon Lescaut), London (I vespri siciliani), Bregenz Festival (Les contes d'Hoffmann) and Hamburg (Le nozze di Figaro). Opernwelt magazine voted him director of the year in 2006, 2007 and 2010. Herheim lives in Berlin, where he will stage Der Ring des Nibelungen for Deutsche Oper Berlin in the 2020 – 2021 season.
