Steef de Jong

Theatre maker

Steef de Jong, from the Netherlands, is a theatre maker, artist and operetta advocate. In his work, he likes to explore the boundaries between art and kitsch, the rational and the sentimental, reality and fantasy, and subtle details versus big gestures. He attended the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Amsterdam University of the Arts (DasArts).

As a student, he fell in love with operetta. In 2014, he and Ina Veen set up the Groots en Meeslepend foundation through which he created various ‘one-person operettas’. He created adaptations of Eine Nacht in Venedig (Johann Strauss II) and Der tapfere Soldat (Oscar Straus) for Toneelschuur Productions. In 2024, he created the new operetta Postillon d’amour for Stadsschouwburg Haarlem. In 2022, he made his debut at the Volksoper in Vienna, the Valhalla of operetta, with Ein Papp-Konzert. In April 2026, he will be returning to the Volksoper for a new production of Der Zarewitsch by Franz Lehár.
