The Chinese bass-baritone Shenyang gained international renown when he won the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in 2007. Early on in his career, he focused mainly on roles in works by Rossini, Mozart and Handel, but more recently he has shifted his attention to the dramatic bass-baritone repertoire, making highly acclaimed debuts as Don Pizarro in Fidelio, Jochanaan in Salome, Klingsor in Parsifal and Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde. His singing career has taken him to venues including the Paris Opera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Glyndebourne Festival, La Monnaie in Brussels and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
