Martin Mkhize

South African baritone Martin Mkhize studied at the University of Cape Town. He won the first prize and the audience prize at the Shock Foundation vocal competition. At Cape Town Opera, he sang the title role of Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte. The latter earned him a nomination in the category ‘Best Male Actor’ at Fleur du Cap Theatre Nomination. Other roles in his repertoire include Dandini in La Cenerentola, Betto di Signa in Gianni Schicchi and Nsimane in the opera Blood of Mine by South African composer Sibusiso Nieza. In 2018, Mkhize joined Dutch National Opera Studio. There, he went on to sing the roles of Il commissario imperial in Puccini's Madama Butterfly and Il conte Robinson in Il Matrimonio Segreto. In season 2019/2020, he performed as Garbi in the world premiere of Willem Jeths' Ritratto. In the following two seasons, he returned to Dutch National Opera as Belcore in L'elisir d'amore, as Snake in How ANANSI freed the stories of the world, and as one of the Policemen and Congregants in Blue. 

Martin Mkhize sings the role of Bill in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny, which will be performed at Dutch National Opera from 6 September to 27 September 2023.
