Marcel Beekman

Tenor

Tenor Marcel Beekman made his international breakthrough at the Theater an der Wien with the title role of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Platée, described by the New York Times as “unforgettable”. Successful performances of roles as Mime in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen (Vienna), Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos (Paris and Luxembourg), Bababeck in Barkouf (Zürich) and Nutrice in L‘incoronazione di Poppea (Vienna and Salzburg) followed. Beekman is known as a singer of early music, especially German and French baroque, but contemporary music is at least as important in his career. He has sung new works by Calliope Tsoupaki, Reza Namavar, Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding and Micha Hamel. At Dutch National Opera, he has sung many roles, including Casella in La commedia (2008), Le Cabaretier in Benvenuto Cellini (2015) and Hauptmann in Wozzeck (2017).
