Gábor Bretz

Bass-baritone

The Hungarian bass-baritone Gábor Bretz studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest and has been a regular performer at the Hungarian State Opera since his graduation. In the 2025/26 season, he will sing the title role in Hindemith’s Cardillac at Opernhaus Zürich, Heinrich der Vogler in Lohengrin, and Count Walter in Luisa Miller at the Hamburgische Staatsoper. He has previously performed Wotan in Das Rheingold and Die Walküre and Der Wanderer in Siegfried at De Munt, and Vodnik in Tchaikovsky’s Rusalka at Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He has also appeared at the Royal Opera House, Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, Opéra National de Paris, the Salzburg Festival, and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. He is internationally renowned for his interpretations of Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle.
