Composer

Peter Salem composes music for contemporary ballet, film and television. Lady Macbeth is his tenth full-length ballet. 

Salem’s first ballet composition was A Streetcar Named Desire in 2012, a collaboration with choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and director Nancy Meckler. This partnership continued with Doña Perón, Frida – which premiered at Dutch National Ballet in 2020 –, The Little Prince, and Coco Chanel

Similarly, Salem has built an ongoing collaboration with choreographer Helen Pickett and director James Bonas, previously working together on The Crucible (2019, Scottish Ballet) and Emma Bovary (2023, The National Ballet of Canada). He also composed the music for Pickett’s first full-length ballet, Camino Real (2014). In 2019, he was nominated for a National Dance Award for ‘Outstanding Creative Contribution 

Salem’s work for film and television is internationally acclaimed. He composed music for Call the Midwife, winning the 2016 Music and Sound Award for ‘Best Television Score’, as well as for Cider With Rosie, Five Daughters, Great Expectations, and the documentaries Francesco’s Venice and The Power of Art. Additionally, he has created numerous scores for theatre, including productions by The Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, and Shared Experience Theatre.
