Lorenzo Viotti conducts verismo double bill

13 August 2019

Conductor Lorenzo Viotti will be making his debut with Dutch National Opera earlier than planned, replacing Sir Mark Elder in the verismo double bill Pagliacci / Cavalleria rusticana. Mark Elder has had to cancel the production to undergo neck surgery.

As of the 2021-2022 season, Lorenzo Viotti will be the new chief conductor of Dutch National Opera and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. He will take over the dual role from the current chief conductor Marc Albrecht. Viotti made his debut with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in Het Concertgebouw (Stravinsky's Petrushka), but has not conducted at Dutch National Opera before.

Of the eight performances of Pagliacci / Cavalleria rusticana in September 2019, Viotti will conduct five performances on 5, 8, 11, 21 and 28 September 2019. The performances on 15, 18 and 24 September will be conducted by Aldert Vermeulen, assistant conductor at Dutch National Opera.
