Set and costume designer

Luis F. Carvalho is an internationally sought-after set and costume designer, active in the fields of opera, theater, dance, television, and fashion. He was born in Portugal and moved to London in the early 1990s, where he studied Theater Design at the Wimbledon School of Art, followed by Women’s Wear Fashion Design at Central St. Martin’s College.

Carvalho has worked for many major opera houses and festivals across Europe, including l’Opéra national de Paris, the Royal Opera House in London, Baden-Baden Festspiele, Opera di Roma, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, and Teatro Real Madrid. In the Netherlands, he has collaborated multiple times with Opera Zuid on productions such as L’elisir d’amore, Un ballo in maschera, and La Bohème.

Among the theater productions Carvalho has designed are Jedermann (Salzburger Festspiele), Cabaret (Lido de Paris), Edipo Re (Teatro Greco Antico di Siracusa INDA), Out of Blixen (The Printroom), and The Human Voice (Trafalgar Studios). He has also created sets and costumes for choreographers such as Arthur Pita (Run Mary Run, Sadler’s Wells), Genau (Profili and Quirk), and Shanghai Surbir (Hong Kong Depression 1999).
