Lucy Carter

Lighting designer

The British light artist and lighting designer Lucy Carter has designed lighting for theatre, ballet, dance and musical productions. Over the past twenty years, she has worked with various prominent ballet companies, including San Francisco Ballet, New York City Ballet, Australian Ballet, the Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris, the Bolshoi Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, The Royal Danish Ballet, Scottish Ballet, Stuttgarter Ballett, Boston Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and The Joffrey Ballet.

Carter has also been working closely for years with choreographer Wayne McGregor, and has done the lighting for his productions Multiverse, Woolf Works, Autobiography, Raven Girl and Yugen, among others. She has also designed the lighting for opera productions such as Hänsel und Gretel (San Francisco Opera), Salome (English National Opera) and La finta giardiniera (Glyndebourne, Teatro alla Scala Milan and Shanghai), and collaborated on the theatre productions Husbands and Sons, Medea and Emil and the Detectives (National Theatre, London), and Oil (Almeida Theatre). She has won the prestigious Knight of Illumination Award for Dance twice, for her designs for Wayne McGregor’s Chroma (2008) and Woolf Works (2015).
