Laura Cappelle

Laura Cappelle is an arts writer and sociologist who lives in France. She has been the Parisbased dance critic for the Financial Times since 2010 and covers French theatre for the New York Times. Additionally, she writes a monthly column, “France/Dance," for Dancing Times, and has contributed to the Guardian, Pointe and Dance Magazine, among other publications.

Laura Cappelle also holds a Ph.D. in arts sociology from the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3 (2018). Her doctoral thesis explored the process of making new works in four international ballet companies today. She has taught sociology, dance history and other courses at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3 and the Université Paris 1 Panthéon- Sorbonne, and gives regular talks about dance and theatre. In 2015, she was the dance consultant for the BAFTA-nominated docudrama Rudolf Nureyev – Dance to Freedom, directed by Richard Curson Smith.
