The Dutch-Mexican Itzel Medecigo studied at the College of Music in Mexico City and at the Conservatory of Utrecht. Nowadays she is coached by Nadine Secunde. Over the years she has worked with Dobrinka Yankova, Gemma Visser, Susan Young, Jeff Cohen, Janet Williams, Aldert Vermeulen and many others.

In 2007 Itzel received the award for 'Best Interpretation of Mexican Music' during the Maritza Alemán Singing Competition. In 2013 and 2015 she took part in Dutch National Opera's Talent Development Programme. As a concert soloist, Itzel has given recitals in Mexico, Australia, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. When singing recitals, she likes to make connections with other disciplines, such as dance and design.

Her opera repertoire ranges from Purcell via belcanto to contemporary composers - with roles such as Carmen, Flora, Dido, Dalila and Amneris, including the world premieres of the music theatre performance One legatura to be plucked by Danai Beltsa (2011), Over by Rick van Veldhuizen for the Opera Forward Festival of DNO (2016) and Requiem by Gavin Bryars, commissioned by Dutch National Ballet (2019).
