Karel Vanhooren

Set designer

Karel Vanhooren discovered his passion for scenography at the age of fifteen. While studying architecture in Ghent, he saw a close connection between scenography and architecture, with both the conceptual design and the technical execution playing key roles. This resulted in the firm luum architects, where he is one of the directors and an architectural designer. His work as a scenographer has taken him to prestigious theatres in Ghent, Brussels, Ostend, Utrecht, Düsseldorf and Berlin. The combination of his activities as an architect and scenographer allows him to find a unique balance between design and social engagement, while remaining constantly alert to both beauty and context. As a scenographer, he collaborates regularly with the director Gregory Caers. The two share a love of the arts and a deep interest in the role art can play in society. Their joint projects, often using minimal resources, testify to a bold, idiosyncratic attitude that typifies their collaboration.
