Ivo van Hove

Stage director

The much-acclaimed stage director Ivo van Hove has led Toneelgroep Amsterdam, now International Theater Amsterdam (ITA), from 2001 to September 2023. Here, he developed productions such as Roman Tragedies and Kings of War after William Shakespeare. He also created The Fountainhead after Ayn Rand's novel of the same name and A Little Life after Hanya Yanagihara's book. Van Hove's productions have been performed at the Festival d'Avignon, Edinburgh International Festival, Venice Biennale, Holland Festival and the Salzburg Festival, among others. In 2023, Van Hove made his debut with productions of Mozart's Don Giovanni and Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking at The Metropolitan Opera in New York. Van Hove also staged several musicals, including Rent (2000), the world premiere of David Bowie's musical Lazarus (2015) and a radical remake of West Side Story (2020) on Broadway in collaboration with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. In 2024, he will create a new staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. Starting in 2024, he will take on the role of Intendant of the Ruhrtriennale. For Dutch National Opera, Van Hove previously worked on The Makropulos Affair (2002), Iolanta (2004), Der Schatzgräber (2012) and Salome (2017).

In September 2023, Ivo van Hove returns to Dutch National Opera to direct Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny.
