Isabelle van Keulen
Isabelle van Keulen performs frequently as a soloist – on both violin and viola – with renowned orchestras such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, and the Netherlands Philharmonic, under conductors including Riccardo Chailly and Valery Gergiev. She also champions chamber music in a wide variety of ensembles and regularly performs in a play/direct capacity: as a soloist who leads the orchestra while playing.
In addition to the standard violin and viola concertos, her repertoire includes works by Henri Dutilleux, John Adams, Sofia Gubaidulina and Lera Auerbach, as well as the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by Erkki-Sven Tüür, which was composed especially for Van Keulen. In 2011, she founded the Isabelle van Keulen Ensemble, a successful quartet through which she revived Astor Piazzolla’s tango nuevo. From 1997 to 2006, Van Keulen was artistic director of the Delft Chamber Music Festival, which she also founded. Since the 2017–2018 season, she has served as artist in residence and artistic director of the Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss. In addition, Van Keulen has been a professor of violin, viola and chamber music at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts since 2012.
