Calixto Bieito

The Spanish director Calixto Bieito is renowned internationally for his innovative take on the opera canon. He has directed numerous works from the operatic repertoire, ranging from Monteverdi's Poppea to Zimmermann’s Die Soldaten. The opera houses he has worked in include the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Vienna State Opera, Zurich Opera House, Staatsoper Berlin and Bayerische Staatsoper. He has also been the artistic director at Teatre Romea in Barcelona and he founded the Barcelona Internacional Teatre. Bieito was appointed the artistic director of Teatro Arriaga in 2017. In addition to Die ersten Menschen, Bieito has previously directed Giulio Cesare (2023) for Dutch National Opera.

Calixto Bieito will return in January 2025 for a revival of Die ersten Menschen (22 Jan - 2 Feb 2025).
