Bettina Auer studied musical theatre direction as well as musicology and German philology in Hamburg and Berlin. Besides engagements as a musical dramatic adviser and head dramatic adviser at theatres in Bern, Darmstadt, Basel and the Komische Oper Berlin she has supervised various productions and projects in drama and dance. She has worked as a dramaturg at Salzburg Festival, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Den Norske Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris, Residenztheater München, Burgtheater Wien and Theater an der Wien. Since 2009 she has worked regularly in collaboration with Calixto Bieito. Additionally, she has worked with directors such as Stefan Bachmann, Karin Beier, Claus Guth, Jasmina Hadziahmetovic, Barbora Horáková, Nicolas Stemann and Michael Thalheimer. She has also collaborated with Barrie Kosky and Tatjana Gürbaca, whose Armide and La Traviata were previously staged at DNO. Bettina Auer has been a lecturer at various academies since a longtime.
