Alexander Raskatov

Composer

Alexander Raskatov is a Russian composer with Jewish roots. In 1978 he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory. One of the experiences that made the strongest impression during that period was an expedition to distant regions of Russia to collect and record folk songs. That left him with a deeper understanding of what the human voice is. In 1994 he left Russia after he was invited to come to Frankfurt by publishing house M.P. Belaieff. His earlier operas include GerMANIA (2018) for Opéra de Lyon and Eclipse (2018) for the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. For Dutch National Opera, Raskatov previously created the opera A Dog’s Heart, which premiered in 2010. Animal Farm is his fourth opera and his second commission by DNO.
