Although Wijnand van der Horst initially pursued a career as a lighting technician, he has developed into a lighting designer in a wide range of disciplines - from opera, ballet and theatre to museums and architecture. His work is mainly characterised by emotion, association and rhythm, in which he searches for the balance between his own personal style and the essence of the work itself. In his designs, he mainly lets the music guide him.
Wijnand followed a two-year coaching programme with lighting designer Henk van der Geest. After that, he has worked with directors such as Lotte de Beer and Robin Coops, as well as with choreographers Juanjo Arqués, Nicolas Rapaic and Daniela Cardim. He recently created the lighting design for several choreographies within the dynamic programme Unboxing Ballet 2; a special performance celebrating the work of three master choreographers of twentieth-century dance.
