In 2002, he graduated in film directing from the New York Film Academy. He combines composition, scriptwriting, and film and stage directing. Michel van der Aa has worked with classical soloists like Sol Gabetta, Barbara Hannigan, Janine Jansen, Christianne Stotijn and Roderick Williams, the Portuguese fado singer Ana Moura, pop stars Kate Miller-Heidke and The New Puritans, and actors like Klaus Maria Brandauer and João Reis. In 1999, he was the first Dutch composer to win the Gaudeamus Music Award, for his composition Between. He has also received the Matthijs Vermeulen Award (2004), the Ernst von Siemens Composition Prize (2005), the Charlotte Köhler Award for his work as a director and the interdisciplinary character of his oeuvre (2005), the Paul Hindemith Prize (2006) and the Kagel Prize (2013). Michel van der Aa received the Grawemayer Award for Composition for Up-Close (2013) and the Johannes Vermeer Award (2015). In March 2016, Michel van der Aa will be the main guest at the Biennalle Musique in Lyon.
