Conductor

Kwamé Ryan was born in Canada and grew up in Trinidad and Tobago. Ryan was General Music Director of Freiburg Opera from 1999 to 2003, and served as Musical and Artistic Director of the National Orchestra of Bordeaux Aquitaine between 2007 and 2013. As of this season, he is the Music Director of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. His recent engagements as a conductor have included opera houses such as La Monnaie in Brussels and Houston Grand Opera. He will be making his debut with Washington National Opera this season. In the concert podium, he has recently conducted orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, the Residentie Orkest in The Hague, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra. At Dutch National Opera, he previously conducted Blue (2022).
