Brazilian-American soprano Sophia Hunt was born in New York and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 2023, she won the Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition and in 2022, she reached the semifinals of the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition. Sophia has sung roles such as Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Vitellia in La clemenza di Tito, Faith in Rene Orth’s Empty the House, Violetta in La traviata and Contessa Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro.

She is also engaged in concert and recital work and has sung with Opera Philadelphia, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, with Curtis on Tour in Greece, The City Choir of Washington and the Art Song Preservation Society of New York. Recently Sophia was a studio artist with Wolf Trap Opera and a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival.

Sophia is excited to join the Dutch National Opera Studio in season 2023/2024: “In 2014, I saw my very first opera on holiday with my parents: Arabella, at Dutch National Opera. I immediately fell in love with the singers, the music and also the house of National Opera & Ballet. Now, ten years later, I feel incredibly honoured to add my name to the impressive list of singers who have sung on this stage.”

“I am greatly looking forward to learning from the more experienced singers and from the entire team at Dutch National Opera. And, of course, I can’t wait for my debut! That I get to do so in the role of Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte is very special to me – it’s Mozart’s music that I have sung the most in my life, so I can’t wait to get started with this production.”
