A first introduction to remember
A visit to Dutch National Opera & Ballet is more than just a performance or activity. Children experience music, dance, singing, storytelling, costumes and sets up close. Together, you step into a different world filled with imagination, wonder and new experiences.
Our family programme is designed for children of different ages. For every performance, workshop or activity, you’ll find the recommended age and duration on the website. This makes it easy to choose something that suits your child, from a short first introduction to a larger-scale performance for older children.
Everything you need for a great visit
A theatre visit with children doesn’t have to be perfectly quiet. A little excitement, energy or fidgeting is completely natural, especially when everything is new. We recommend arriving a little early so you can settle in together before the performance begins.
For family performances in Studio Boekman, the Theatre Café opens early, where you can enjoy a drink or something to eat before the performance. If you’re attending a performance in the Main Stage, you’re welcome in the foyer beforehand. There are often extra activities for children too, such as colouring or a short activity related to the performance.

What age is my child expected to be?
This varies depending on the performance or activity, so always check the recommended age listed with the programme. The recommendation takes into account factors such as the length of the performance, the story and what children of that age are generally able to follow and enjoy.
Does my child have to sit completely still during the performance?
A theatre visit does require some attention, but children are, of course, welcome to respond to what they see and hear. A little excitement, energy or fidgeting is completely natural, especially during a first visit.
Do we need to know anything about opera or ballet before we come?
No prior knowledge is needed. Our family programme is designed to introduce children and adults alike to music, dance, singing, storytelling and everything that happens on and behind the stage.
Are booster seats available for children?
Booster seats are available for performances in the Main Stage. You can ask a member of staff for one at the cloakroom. Performances in Studio Boekman are arranged so that children have a good view without needing a booster seat.
Can younger siblings come too?
Our family performances and activities are designed for children from the recommended age stated with each programme. The story, running time and style of storytelling are tailored to children of that age. For younger siblings, a performance may be too long, too exciting or difficult to follow. We therefore recommend following the age guidance.
