Evgeny Kulagin

Choreographer and director

The Russian co-director and choreographer Evgeny Kulagin (1981) graduated from the Academy of Arts and Culture in Chelyabinsk. In 2002, together with Ivan Estegneev, he founded the contemporary dance company “Dialogue Dance” in Kostroma, which soon thereafter became an important centre of contemporary dance in Russia. The company was awarded three “Golden Mask” National Theater Awards and worked with major companies and choreographers from Russia, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria, and South Africa.

Since 2014, Kulagin has been working as resident director and choreographer at Moscow’s Gogol Center, founded by Kirill Serebrennikov. With the latter, he co-authored numerous theatrical and operatic productions, such as Cosí fan tutte at Zürich Opera Hause (2018), Nabucco at the Hamburg State Opera (2019), Parsifal at the Vienna State Opera (2021), The Nose at Bavarian State Opera (2021) and der Freischütz (2022) at Dutch National Opera.
