La traviata

This episode of Opera Sessions is all about the helpless Violetta Valéry - a professional party girl and a not-so-respectable lady in 19th-century Paris - who goes down in style and heartbreak with Dutch National Opera in Verdi's La traviata in December.

She is not really suited for an empty-headed existence, but if love presents itself, there is of course always a father-in-law who comes along and tells her in a rare emotional rollercoaster of a duet that, as a woman, you cannot just make something of your life on your own.

She waltzes to her death until Verdi and TB take her breath away. We wonder: how did Verdi get that remote control over our emotional lives? And why do women in 19th century works always have to be so broken up? About opera as an unintended emancipation machine.

Behind the piano, in audio fragments and stories, we explore with Calmer Roos the alchemy of Verdi - his ability to be both exalted and popular at the same time.

Please note Opera Sessions: La traviata will be held in Dutch!
