Movement direction

Nita Liem studied at the Theaterschool Amsterdam and became intrigued by street dance in the 1980s. That subculture inspired her as a theatre maker. In 2000, together with Bart Deuss, she founded dance theatre Don't Hit Mama, a house for young dancers and theatre-makers, where celebration, dance and awareness were central. Liem played a pioneering role in the development of hip-hop dance from the streets to the theatre in the Netherlands. For this and for her entire oeuvre, she received the Dance Pin in December 2023, awarded during the Nederlandse Dansdagen. Since 2020, Nita Liem has focused on raising awareness of colonial history as a performer, researcher and theatre maker. She uses old dance languages as well as dance styles from hip-hop culture.
