The American composer and conductor JOHN ADAMS (composition) is one of the most performed contemporary composers. He works in various genres, including electronic music, orchestral and chamber music, opera and comic musicals.

In the Netherlands he has conducted the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Asko|Schönberg. In 2003 Adams won a Pulitzer Prize for The Transmigration of Souls. In 2017 he was composer-in-residence with the Berliner Philharmoniker. With director Peter Sellars he worked closely together on his operas Nixon in China (1987), The Death of Klinghoffer (1991), El Niño (2000), Doctor Atomic (2005), A Flowering Tree (2006) and the oratorio The Gospel According to the Other Mary (2012). John Adams has won the Erasmus Prize in February 2018.
