Pierre Boulez (1925-2016)

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Pierre Boulez on Tuesday 5 January. Both as composer and conductor he was one the most important representatives of postwar classical music.
Pierre Audi, director Dutch National Opera:
‘No musician, thinker and artist has been more important to me than Pierre Boulez. I am deeply grateful to him for his friendship built up over 30 years and for what I could contribute in bringing him to the Netherlands on several occasions to work with Dutch National Opera (Répons at the Beurs van Berlage and the historic Moses und Aron by Schönberg) and the Holland Festival (concerts and the historic From the House of the Dead by Janácek), as composer, conductor and teacher. May he Rest in piece.’
On 27 and 28 September 1990, during Pierre Audi’s first season as artistic director of Dutch National Opera, two concerts were presented in Amsterdam’s Beurs van Berlage with works by Pierre Boulez. The renowned Ensemble Intercontemporain performed Dialogues de l’ombre double and the Dutch premiere of his masterpiece  Répons under the baton of Boulez himself. In October 1995 Pierre Boulez conducted at Dutch National Opera a historic co-production with the Salzburger Festspiele of Arnold Schönbergs Moses und Aron directed by Peter Stein.
In 2007 Dutch National Opera & Ballet hosted the opening of the Holland Festival, for which Pierre Boulez conducted the internationally acclaimed production of Janácek’s From the House of the Dead, directed by Patrice Chéreau.
