The Opera Gala has been directed by Robert Carsen.

The Gala was attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix.

Programme

Many leading singers will take part, including the soprano Eva Maria Westbroek, mezzo soprano Violeta Urmana, soprano Sabine Devieilhe, soprano Eleonora Buratto, soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, bariton Thomas Oliemans and tenor Paolo Fanale . An ensemble of singers from the Netherlands, including Lenneke Ruiten, Judith van Wanroij, Florieke Beelen and Roger Smeets and the Italian Giovanni Battista Parodi, will sing the finale from Act 2 of Le nozze di Figaro.

The DNO chorus are singing several excerpts from the company’s rich and diverse repertoire, including work by Wagner and Verdi. Marc Albrecht will conduct the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra I Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, paying attention to every last detail and the subtlest of sounds.

The Chinese composer Tan Dun will conduct the European premiere of his latest work Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds. Especially for the occasion of the Gala, Krzysztof Pastor, resident choreographer with Dutch National Ballet, is creating a new ballet for four dancers (three men and one woman) to Puccini’s Crisantemi.

The Opera Gala will be directed by Robert Carsen.

The festivities will begin before the curtain rises, in a sumptuously decorated foyer, with tasty amuses to whet your appetite. The performance is followed by an afterparty, with stylish music, delicious snacks and sparkling drinks, in a toast to the next fifty years!

Due to circumstances former announced singers, Charlotte Margiono and Luca Pisaroni, will not be able to perform at the Opera Gala.

Creation

Making an opera is an extraordinarily complex and challenging task. Often invisible, yet just as essential as the musicians themselves, are the people behind the scenes. So the Opera Gala will also be a tribute to our staff – top professionals in some highly specialised areas.

Anniversary book
In collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, DNO is publishing a beautifully illustrated Anniversary Book. It will describe the history of Dutch National Opera and the special way in which DNO has explored and expanded the opera repertoire over the past fifty years. The book will be on sale after the Opera Gala.

Music

The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Chorus of Dutch National Opera will be led during this Opera Gala by principal conductor Marc Albrecht.
