In short

In Il viaggio to Reims an elite international company has gathered in order to travel on to Rheims for the coronation of Charles X of France. Pending their departure, the ladies and gentlemen flirt and quarrel with one another. Suddenly, it is announced that the journey cannot go ahead, as there is no means of transport. The travellers sing about their fate in a large ensemble. Then a letter arrives from Paris saying that the king will return there after the ceremony and great festivities are planned for the occasion. The Countess invites everyone to her house in Paris. In anticipation, the group holds a party and everyone joins in a song of praise to the new king as a finale.

Conductor Stefano Montanari leads an international cast at his Dutch National Opera debut. Stage director Damiano Michieletto, one of the most interesting young directors today, is working in Amsterdam for the first time, following stagings in Europe, the United States and Asia.
