Young Creative Associate
Juanjo Arqués was a dancer with Dutch National Ballet until 2012 when he turned his focus completely to choreography.
He describes himself as an artist combining the language of modern dance with new media, mythology, literature, architecture and sculptural forms. In 2014, Arqués was nominated for the Dutch Dance Festival Award and in 2016 he received two nominations for a Golden Mask in Moscow for best choreographic work and best choreographer. His choreographies for Dutch National Ballet include Consequence (2012), Roulette (2014), Rewind (2014), Carolingians (2014) and Bites (2015). For the Junior Company of Dutch National Ballet he created Blink (2015) and Fresas (2016), for the occasion of the Jheronimus Bosch Year. He has worked with companies in the United States, Russia, Slovenia, Belgium,Spain and Switzerland. In 2015 he created April for the New York Choreographic Institute. Arqués worked on the play VASLAV and on Performing Gender, a European dance project in Bologna. In 2015 his choreography of Minos premiered at the Moscow Ballet and he created Arrival, a new work for the Origen Festival Cultural in Riom (Switserland). As of January 2017 Arqués is a Young Creative Associate at Dutch National Ballet. February 2017 he created a new work Homo Ludens for Made In Amsterdam, danced by Het Nationale Ballet. In March 2018, Ekklesia, a new work by Juanjo for In the Future danced by Junior Company, went in premiere. In june 2019 followed the Dutch premiere of Ignite, based on a painting by Turner. He got nominated as Best Choreographer for this choreography at the Benois de la Danse in the same year.
