Nanouk Leopold (direction), born in Rotterdam, is one of the most renowned film directors of The Netherlands. She is known for her consequently compelling imagery, suppressed expression and meticulous attention for subtle, but telling details. Being educated at both the Willem de Kooning Academie and the Film Academy, she debuted with the film Îles flottantes in 2001. Her movies have been selected for the most prestigious, international film festivals. Moreover, she received the ‘Gouden Kalf’ for best film direction, for her movie Guernsey (2005). In 2017, she debuted as a theatre director at the International Theatre Amsterdam with Uit het leven van marionetten, an adaptation of Ingar Bergman’s film (1980). Two years later, Leopold directed Harold Pinters’ De Thuiskomst at the repertory company. Since 2016, she is also member of the Society of Arts. Der Zwerg (2021) was Leopold’s opera and Dutch National Opera debut.
