1 July 2021

Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Foyer

Running time

Dutch National Opera and RIGHTABOUTNOW INC. join forces to celebrate and commemorate Keti Koti - the abolition of slavery - in a musical way. With a colourful, diverse programme, the two institutions reflect on our colonial past and celebrate the abolition of slavery.

Pianist Djuwa Mroivili will let the beautiful classical music of several unjustly 'forgotten' black composers from the African diaspora resound through the foyer of Dutch Nationale Opera. Other contributions come from countertenor Arturo den Hartog, spoken word artist Roziena Salihu, the singing group of Antillean musician Kunta Rincho, the kawina women's choir Mamyo Makandra and various Afro-Caribbean oldskool DJs. The programme is hosted by the Surinamese cabaret artist Jeffrey Spalburg. On this special day, we will also be serving free ginger beer and a traditional Heri Heri meal; a one-pot meal that is a traditional Afro-Caribbean dish. It consists of various earth fruits, green and yellow bananas, bakkelauw (salted fish) and a boiled egg.

National manifestation Theatre voor Keti Koti

In recent years, various Dutch theatrical institutions have organised activities around 30 June and 1 July to reflect on the colonial past and celebrate the abolition of slavery in a theatrical way. This year, for the first time, these initiatives have led to the national theatre event Theatre for Keti Koti.

Silences are broken and perspectives begin to shift. In order for our society to be open and resilient, we need to pay attention to histories that have unjustly been hidden away for a long time. The colonial past is one of those burdened chapters in our shared national history, the effects of which can still be felt today.

In our endeavour to do justice to the many voices in our society, Dutch National Opera's participation in this event is in line with the ongoing search for new perspectives and stories that can help us connect past and present in a relevant way. In this programme, we continue previous collaborations and enter into new ones.
